Published in the Winter 2020 issue of Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy, Civil Rights Attorney Karyn Bass Ehler penned the article, “Stepping into the Shoes of the Department of Justice: The Unusual, Necessary, and Hopeful Path the Illinois Attorney General Took to Require Police Reform in Chicago.” Co-authored with Lisa Madigan, former Attorney General for the State of Illinois, and Cara Hendrickson, the article outlines the work of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and its partners in securing the groundbreaking consent decree with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department.
While working for the Illinois Attorney General, Ms. Bass Ehler served as one of the lead counsel in the State of Illinois v. City of Chicago (N.D. Ill.) litigation and negotiation, which resulted in this historic consent decree addressing comprehensive and systemic reform of the Chicago Police Department. This landmark case brings lasting improvements to Chicagoans, supporting the civil rights of those victimized by police misconduct.
