After more than 200 sexual assault survivors came forward with similar allegations, the University of California system reached a $243.6 million settlement. Plaintiffs claimed they were sexually abused by former UCLA gynecologist Dr. James Heaps. Heaps worked at the university in the student health center for several decades before he was arrested in June 2019. He was charged with sexual battery of two patients but pleaded not guilty.
After news of his arrest, many young women came forward with their stories of his misconduct. Heaps’ former patients accused him of inappropriate and sexually suggestive comments and inappropriate touching.
